BIIF basketball: HPA falls to Waiakea, KSH dominates Ka‘u

Hawaii Prep girls basketball fell 81-40 to Big Island Interscholastic Federation powerhouse Waiakea on Thursday in Ka Makani’s Castle Gym.

HPA was outmatched by the Warriors’ depth, as Ka Makani was outscored in every quarter. Waiakea’s Jolie Mantz scored a game-high 38 points, while teammate Puaena Harrington chipped in 18.

Ka Makani’s scoring was led by star Brooke Samura once again, who had 31. Samura is continuing her dominant senior season, averging over 31 points per game. Alana Hernandez was Samura’s highest-scoring teammate with five.

Next up, HPA (3-4 overall, 1-2 BIIF) will enjoy a multi-week holiday break before taking the court again on January 4, when it hosts Kealakehe. Waiakea (8-2 overall, 5-0 BIIF), on the other hand, will suit up at 2 p.m. today at Ka‘u to take on the Trojans.

KSH dominates Ka‘u

Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i girls basketball dominated Ka‘u from start to finish Thursday night in Hilo, blasting the Trojans 57-3.

The Warriors were led by Keanu Huihui, who tallied 22 points, followed by Maela Honma, who had 19. Ka‘u’s lone scorer was Caliyah Silva Kamei.

KSH (5-4 overall, 3-0 BIIF) next face Kealakehe at 6 p.m. Monday in Kailua-Kona. The Trojans (1-2 overall) next host Waiakea at 2 p.m. today at home.
