Four west-side schools make All-BIIF volleyball teams
Players from four west-side schools — Konawaena, Hawaii Prep, Kohala and Honoka‘a — were selected to the 2023 Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) Girls Volleyball All-League Teams on Thursday.
Ka Makani senior Brooke Samura, who played a pivotal role in HPA’s BIIF Division II title, won the Division II Player of the Year Award. Samura and teammate Margot Lewis were selected to D-II’s First Team.
Wildcats stars Kaitea Galletes and Kealyn Shibuya joined HPA on the first-team list. Senior Isabella Stith was additionally selected to the second team.
Joining Stith on DII’s Second Team was the Dragons’ Tawnee Carvalho and the Cowboys’ Kalia Marquez and Mahea Pang.

Waveriders escape Ka Makani
Kealakehe boys basketball edged out HPA in a 35-33 bout on Thursday at Hilo High’s early-season tournament. The teams went back and forth all night, matching their point toal in three of the four quarters.
Demarion Ollaway led the Waveriders with 15 points, while Ka Makani’s Cam Root matched him with 15 of his own.
Kealakehe’s next BIIF matchup will be across the island against Hilo at 7 p.m. Friday. HPA will host Honoka‘a at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Castle Gym.
HPA splits in Kauai tournament
Ka Makani girls basketball traveled to Kauai to play Kalani and Kauai High in an early-season tournament Thursday. HPA split the two games with a 38-36 loss to the Falcons, then beating the Red Raiders 59-44 later in the day.
HPA senior Brooke Samura scored 67 points collectively across the two games — 21 against Kalani, 46 on Kauai. Through four games, the star guard has averaged 31.5 points per game in 2023-24.
Ka Makani (2-2 overall) will return to the island to play Waiakea at 6 p.m. Thursday in Castle Gym.
