Bulls beat Waveriders, remain undefeated

Parker girls basketball beat Kealakehe comfortably Monday night in Kailua-Kona by a score of 36-21. With the win, the Bulls improved to 2-0 overall in the early season. The Waveriders, on the other hand, are still in search of their first victory at 0-2.

Kea‘au edges Ka‘u

The Cougars evened out their record and got their first home win, defeating the visiting Trojans 27-25 on Monday night.

Kea‘au enters the win column at 1-1, falling at home to Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i last week.

Kea‘au will end its three-game home stand and face its first BIIF DI test on Friday — against Kealakehe.

Now 0-2 in BIIF and 0-1 in BIIF DII, Ka‘u will continue searching for its first win. The Trojans will host Christian Liberty Academy at 3 p.m. Saturday for the Canefire’s season opener.

Warriors blank Vikings

Waiakea High’s girls varsity basketball team defeated homestanding Hilo High 60-9 on Monday night at the Hilo HS gym.

The Warriors are so far off to a scorching start — moving to 3-0 in BIIF, 2-0 in BIIF Division I and 4-1 overall.

All three of Waiakea’s BIIF victories have been by margins of greater than 50 points — and the Warriors have so far outscored BIIF DI opponents (Hilo and Kealakehe) 128-13.

During Monday’s game, Waiakea shut Hilo out for three total quarters — as the Vikings scored all nine of their points during the second quarter.

The Warriors scored 25 points during the first quarter, 19 in the second, ten in the third and six in the fourth.

WHS was led by Joli Mantz with 17 points — sinking four field goals and a hat trick of three-pointers. Hannah Iwahiro put up 12 points for the Warriors, all of her point’s coming from threes. Iwahiro sank two three-pointers during the first quarter, one in the second and one in the third.

Hilo’s top scorer was Stephanie Hirowatari with three points — a field goal and a free throw.

The Vikings are now 0-1 in BIIF play and 0-4 overall — and have yet to play a road match, as their previous three showings were during a home preseason tournament. Hilo will have another chance to get a win at home, hosting Parker School (2-0) at 6 p.m. Friday.

Waiakea will be back in action next week, hosting Pahoa High on Monday night.

Waiakea’s JV also beat Hilo, 40-9.
