A fusion of music and skateboarding, the “Skate or Fry” event is set to rock Kailua-Kona from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday at Willie’s Hot Chicken, located on Pawai Place. Their parking lot will be transformed into a skate park for the day.

Five of Kona’s rock and punk bands will take the stage, and DJ Scotty Doo will spin hip hop tunes between sets.

The event, sponsored by Willie’s Hot Chicken and Ancient Mariner Tattoo, has a noble cause: All proceeds from the concert will be directed towards supporting the Kona Skatepark Association in their endeavor to raise funds for an expansion project at the Old A’s skatepark in Kona. The Kona Skatepark Association plays an essential role in fostering youth engagement and physical activity within the Big Island community, making this event a celebration of both music and athleticism.

The bands headlining this occasion include Cyclone Prime, El Sancho, The 1201, The Tremors, and 9IRON.

Alan Wilson, CEO of Willie’s Hot Chicken, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We’re thrilled to host an event that brings together music, skateboarding, and the community spirit that makes Kona so unique. At Willie’s, we believe in the power of youth engagement and recreational activities. It’s an honor to support the Kona Skatepark Association in their mission.”

Chris Senn, owner of Ancient Mariner Tattoo and a former professional skateboarder, highlighted the importance of skateparks in nurturing the potential of the Big Island’s youth. “Skateparks are hubs for creativity, resilience and community bonding,” Senn remarked. “They provide a safe space for kids to express themselves and stay active. This event is a fantastic way to come together and raise funds for a cause that enriches our community.”

El Sancho guitarist Alan Kasameyer, drawing a parallel between punk rock music and skateboarding, stated, “Punk rock and skateboarding have always had a strong connection. Both cultures are about creativity, freedom, and pushing boundaries. We’re excited to bring our music to this event and support the Kona Skatepark Association’s expansion plans.”

All ages are welcome, with free entry for kids 12 and under. Adult admission is $10,and 100% of proceeds from the door go directly to the Kona Skatepark Association.

Skaters of all skill levels are encouraged to bring their boards and enjoy the ramps in the parking lot, with contests and prizes sponsored by local businesses. For safety, helmets and pads are recommended, and all skateboarders must sign a waiver. Participants under 18 require a parent’s signature on the waiver form.
