Waiakea boys, Hilo girls win XC Week 6

Hawaii Prep Academy hosted the sixth meet of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) cross country season Friday afternoon, with the Waiakea boys coming on top once again with an average 5k time of 19:21.72 and scoring 22 total points. Shane Tominaga was the Warriors’ top finisher with an 18:19.73 time and placing second overall. James Peachy from McQueen High School won the overall individual race with an 18:00.27 time.

Kealakehe’s Landon Cabatbat was the island’s top west-side school individual runner — placing ninth overall and racing in 19:48.51. HPA was the top west-side finisher, earning second place with an average time of 21:03.02 and 103 points.

On the girls side, Hilo won narrowly over Waiakea, scoring 46 points with an average race time of 23:46.61. Kekaihulali Halpern was the Vikings’ top indivudal finisher and won the race, running in 20:09.12. Kealakehe’s Elisa Childers was the top west-side runner, finishing in second with a 22:11.03 time. Similar to the boys race, HPA was the top overall west-side school finisher, scoring 71 points with an average race time of 25:16.43 in the third-place outing.

Due to Ironman festivities this weekend, BIIF cross country will take a week-long hiatus before returning to the course at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at Kea‘au.

Wildcats sweep Ka ‘Umeke

Konawaena girls volleyball earned its eighth win of the season Friday night against Ka ‘Umeke in Kealakekua — winning in straight sets by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-10. Ka ‘Umeke dropped to 2-8.

Now at 8-1 and sitting firmly in third in the BIIF Division-II standings, the Wildcats will next face Parker at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home. Ka ‘Umeke next faces the top team in Division II in Ka‘u, with the first serve being scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday on the road.

Kohala handles Parker

Kohala girls volleyball beat Parker in straight sets Saturday — 25-18, 25-19 and 25-10. The Cowgirls improved to 7-2 on the season, remaining in the No. 4 spot in BIIF Division II. The Bulls dropped to 6-4 and stayed in fifth in Division II.

Kohala will next host St. Joseph at 5 p.m. Friday in Kapaau. Parker will be back in action tonight, playing Honoka‘a at 5 p.m. in Waimea.

Kanu falls to the Seasiders

Laupahoehoe PCS ended its six-game loss streak, sweeping homestanding Kanu ‘o ka ‘Aina Charter on Friday night.

The Seasiders prevailed in straight sets of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-15.

This was a crucial win for Laupahoehoe, potentially helping its team secure a BIIF DII playoff berth.

Now 4-6, the Seasiders have two remaining matches — one away and their last at home. On Tuesday evening, Laupahoehoe will play against Makua Lani Christian at the Kona Old Airport.

The Seasiders’ final home showing will be Saturday, Oct. 14 against Konawaena HS.

Now at a dismal 0-10, Kanu has one remaining opportunity to get in the win collumn — away at Pahoa on Monday night (5 p.m.).
