A Kona grand jury on Wednesday indicted a 40-year-old Waimea man suspected of shooting from a car at a pair of men in a pickup truck Monday in Kailua-Kona.
The nine-count indictment charges Shayne Kamuela Unea with attempted second-degree murder, two counts first-degree terroristic threatening, prohibited possession of ammunition, first- and second-degree reckless endangering, first-degree property damage, driving without a license, and resisting an order to stop.
According to police, a pair of Waimea men — 35-year-old Keolamana Kaae and 33-year-old Nohea Kaae — flagged down an officer on Kaiminani Drive to report they had been shot at while seated in a parked, black 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck in the 73-4300 block of Lau‘i Street.
Neither man was hit by gunfire, but the truck had bullet holes in both the front and rear driver-side doors, according to court documents.
While an officer interviewed the victims, a black Honda Accord approached, and the elder Kaae identified it as the assailant’s car.
The driver of the Honda, whom police identified as Unea, allegedly attempted to evade police, but was apprehended on Ane Keohokalole Highway after being stuck in traffic.
According to the documents, there was a 1-year-old boy in the rear passenger-side seat of the Honda. Police also reportedly recovered 39 rounds of ammunition from the sedan.
Police have not publicly identified a motive for the shooting or said whether the victims and the alleged shooter are acquainted.
The most serious offense, attempted second-degree murder, carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
A bench warrant accompanying the indictment set Unea’s bail at $200,000 and ordered him to stay away from the Kaaes, their homes and their workplaces.
Unea remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center and, once he’s rearrested on the indictment, is expected to enter his plea to the charges before 3rd Circuit Chief Judge Robert Kim.
