Kamuela (HI)—On Friday, October 6 at Kahilu, join us for an evening of Ghost Stories of Hawai’i with master storyteller Lopaka Kapanui. From ancient Hawaii to the present day, we’ll hear stories of spirits, curses, possessions, night marchers, mo’o wahine, the goddess Pele, and more!
Sometimes known as “the ghost guy,” native Hawaiian storyteller Lopaka Kapanui makes a business of leading guests into some of the darkest, spookiest places in Hawaii. His family’s legends, history, customs, and protocol were passed down to Lopaka in the traditional Hawaiian way: through mo‘olelo, from mouth to ear, sitting at the foot of his elders as they relayed the lessons to him. Later, after working with a renowned historian and the godfather of ghost tours in Hawai‘i, Lopaka began writing and chronicling the supernatural experiences of himself and others. Having been in the storytelling business for more than 20 years, hundreds of people have come forward to share their own stories with Lopaka, making him a repository for some of the islands’ spookiest tales. Sharing more than just Hawaiian ghost stories, Lopaka shares his knowledge of the history and legends of Hawai‘i. He is also the author of four spooky story compilations about Hawai‘i and the people who live here, and one non-fiction work, Hawaii’s Night Marchers: A History of the Huaka‘i Po.
