Douglas Abran

Douglas Abran, 76, of Waimea, Kaua’i, formerly of Honoka’a, died August 8, 2023 at his residence. Born in Haina, Hawai’i. He worked as a Liliko tractor operator and factory mechanic at the former Hāmākua Sugar Company and worked and retired from the Kaua’i Lagoons Golf Course. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army receiving a Bronze Star Medal and an Army Commendation Medal for Heroism. A service to honor his life on Kaua’i will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Westside Christian Center Church in Kekaha. Visitation from 10-11:00 a.m. with service to follow. A celebration of life will be held on the Big Island of Hawai’i on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the Honoka’a United Methodist Church. Visitation from 10:00- 11:00 a.m. with Military Honors and Service to follow. Survived by son Dasan (Leimomi Wright) Abran of Hilo, daughter Maelan (Bryant) Azevedo of Hilo; sisters Frances Alpiche of Honoka’a, Suzanne Tamashiro of Honoka’a, Virginia Kaneao of Waikoloa,Shirley Kirkwood of Illinois, Dolores Sharp of Washington, Attie (Randal) Millare of Kona and brother Ronald (Val) Abran of Kapulena; one grandson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Solomon Kaawaloa, Sr.

Solomon Poni Kaawaloa, Sr., 80, of Pahoa, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2023 at Hilo Medical Center. Born on May 22, 1943, in Olaa. He was a retired Mason Journeyman. He also was a Veteran in the US Army National Guard and a member of the Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may call on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Visitation from 8 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; Celebration of Mass at 12 noon; with Military Honors to follow by (US Army Hawaii National Guard) Cremation at Dodo Mortuary Crematory. He is survived by wife, Frances Kaawaloa of Pahoa; children, Tammy K. (Mario) Ruano-Parada-Kawaaloa, Tina Marie K. (Edward) Kaawaloa-Bedsaul and Solomon P. (Patricia) Kawaaloa, Jr.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; hanai children, Thompson Quihano, Michael Quihano and Sherry Babchuk; Numerous cousins, nieces and nephew. Alfred Abinosa

Alfred Buan Abinosa, 87, passed away on August 15, 2023. He was born on June 16, 1936 in Hilo, Hawai’i. He was the fourth of twelve children born to Trinidad Panoy Tamala. After her divorce from Alfred’s father, Apolonio Topas Buan, Sr., Trinidad married Fausto Ianila Abinosa of Pahoa, Hawai’i, where Alfred spent his childhood days. After graduating from Pahoa High School in 1955, he joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge after completing his military term. He worked for the Transport Company of Texas stationed in Kwajalein from 1961-1975. He then returned to Hawai’i to be close to family. He was employed in sales and office work before owning his lawn-care business in Kailua-Kona. In 2008 he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he resided until his passing due to injuries sustained in a fall. He married Marguerite Fifer Fulton in 1979 and acquired two stepdaughters: Angie (Joe) Crable and Debbie (Ryan) Magallanes. Although he and Margie divorced in 1986, Al still embraced her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as family. Al is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and three sisters. He is survived by a brother, Lawrence (Bonnie) Abinosa of Sharpsville, PA, and Mesa, AZ; and two sisters, Rose Marie (Brian) Ernstrom and Debra Lee (Vernon) Wagner, both of Logan, Utah. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and grandnieces, and nephews and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Fausto and Trinidad Abinosa Scholarship Endowment Fund at Utah State University, 1590 Old Main Hill, Logan, Utah 84322-1590. Funeral arrangements are being handled through Allen-Hall Mortuary on 34 East Center Street in Logan. A graveside memorial service will be conducted at the Providence City Cemetery on Friday, 8 September 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time, and can be accessed via Zoom. Vincent Chang

Vincent “Vinny” Senichi Okimoto Chang, 27, of Kealakekua, died on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Kona Community Hospital. He was born on December 5, 1995 in Kealakekua, Hawaii. He was an aquaculture technician for Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe at OTEC. He was a member of the Konawaena Class of 2013. Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Akitsu Kumiai, Kona Boyz 4-H Club, an avid ulua fisherman and a community volunteer and supporter of several community organizations. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday (Sept. 4, 2023) at Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Kealakekua, Hawaii. The family requests that casual attire be worn. Survived by, mother, Claudia Chang of Kealakekua; brothers, Jacob (Abby) Chang of Aiea, Oahu and Beau Chang of Kealakekua; 2 nephews; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.
