Police arrest Ocean View man in robbery investigation

Police arrested a 21-year-old Captain Cook man on suspicion of first-degree robbery Wednesday in connection with an incident at a retail establishment in Ocean View.

At about 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to an active burglary at a business in the 92-8000 block of Mamalahoa Highway in Ocean View. While investigating, officers were alerted to a second active burglary occurring at a nearby retail establishment.

According to police, officers entered the second business and discovered a masked man, Derick Camacho, making verbal threats and physically dragging a 61-year-old man into a back room.

When Camacho refused to comply with officer’s orders to release the victim, an officer tased Camacho, who was subsequently taken into police custody, police said.

Camacho remains in custody at the Kealakehe Police Station while West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives continue to investigate. A charging decision with additional offenses is anticipated.

Police seek info on Hilo accident

Police are seeking for the public’s assistance in their investigation of a traffic collision that occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Kinoole and West Lanikaula streets in Hilo.

According to police, witnesses at the scene reported a 66-year-old Keaau man fell from the bed of a green pickup truck while it traveled south through the intersection.

The truck might have been involved in a traffic collision with a red sedan. However, both vehicles fled prior to police arrival.

The victim, according to police, sustained head and back injuries and was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remained in stable condition Thursday.

Police arrest 27 for DUI

During the week of July 10-16, 2023, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. Three of the drivers arrested were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Hilo and Kona, 10 each; Puna four; North Kohala, two; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 536 DUI arrests compared to 561 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.5%.

There have been 458 major collisions so far this year compared with 424 during the same period last year, an increase of 8%.

To date, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities, compared to 22 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 54.5%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
