Waiakea defeats KSH
In both teams’ final regular season outing, Waiakea High School’s boys varsity volleyball team took Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i to the fifth set and won.
WHS edged KSH in the first set to win 25-23, before KSH dominated the second and third by 25-16 in each.
Waiakea hung on with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set, then won the fifth 15-11.
Nauhi Liwis led KSH with 16 kills, five digs and an ace. Kullen Pua and Micah Wana contributed 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Both teams will enter the BIIF DI semifinals tonight.
KSH is seeded No. 1 and will host No. 4 Kealakehe High School. No. 3 Waiakea will play away at No. 2 Hilo. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m.
Trojans defeat Dragons, fall to Cowboys
The Ka‘u High School boys volleyball team defeated Honoka‘a High School 4-1 in the first round of BIIF DII playoffs before falling 4-1 to Kohala High School in the quarterfinal.
The Trojans hosted the Dragons on Thursday, and won the first two sets 25-15 and 28-26 before falling 25-19 in the third. Ka‘u then won the fourth set 25-20.
The Trojans were led by Tyson Junior Kuahuia-Faafia with a whopping 26 kills, four blocks and two aces.
At Kohala, Ka‘u won the first set 25-16 — but its postseason ended as the Cowboys won straight sets of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-18.
Kuahuia-Faafia closed out his season with another dominant performance — recording 19 kills, four blocks and three aces.
Kohala will advance to the semifinal, in which it will take on No. 1 seed Pahoa High School at 6 p.m. today at the Daggers’ home court.
The winner will advance to the championship, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Konawaena High School.
Ka Makani over Canefire
The Hawai‘i Prep boys volleyball team defeated Christian Liberty Academy 4-1 at home in the BIIF DII quarterfinals.
Ka Makani won the first set 25-13 before the Canefire bounced back with a 25-21 victory in the second set.
HPA won the next two sets 25-18 and 25-16.
Ka Makani will play away at No. 2 seed Konawaena High School for the semifinals today at 6 p.m.
