Canefire advance to next playoff round

Christian Liberty Academy’s boys volleyball team swept Parker School in the first round of BIIF Division II playoffs Wednesday evening.

The No.6 seeded Canfire edged the No.7 Bulls to win the first set 27-25.

CLA took another narrow victory, 25-22, in set two — then was dominant in the third 25-19.

Judah Shrinski led the Canefire up front with a massive 17 kills and three blocks. Caleb Vogt contributed 11 kills and three aces, and Christian Lee trailed with ten kills. Setter Lawson DeLeon notched 25 assists and Eli Rushton had 15 assists.

CLA will travel to Hawai‘i Prep at 6 p.m. Saturday to take on No.3 seeded Ka Makani in the quarterfinal.

The winner of Saturday’s match will play away Monday against No.2 Konawaena High School in the semifinal.

The BIIF DII Championship will take place Wednesday evening at Konawaena, and both the winner and runner-up will earn a berth in the HHSAA DII State playoff bracket. The HHSAA state tourney will be played May 11-13th at various high schools on O‘ahu.

Division I play nears end

Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i and Waiakea High School each won their second-to-last regular season outings on Wedesnday.

KSH hosted Kea‘au for its senior game and crushed the cougars in straight sets of 25-13, 25-7 and 25-18.

Senior Nauhikapakea Liwis led the Warriors with seven kills, three aces and two digs. Classmate Micah Wana led in kills with eight and also had an ace and a dig — while fellow senior Micah Mahuna had four kills, two aces and three digs.

Sophomore Kullen Puna notched six kills and two digs for KSH.

Tonight at 5 p.m., KSH will make a short trip North to Waiakea High School for its and WHS’ final regular season outing.

Waiakea also notched a sweep Wednesday night — defeating Kealakehe High School 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23.

WHS, KSH and KHS will all compete in the BIIF DI playoffs next week, starting Monday.

Now 10-0, KSH received the No.1 seed and will host the No.4 Waveriders at 6 p.m. Monday for the semifinals.

Waiakea is seeded No.3, and will play away at No.2 Hilo High School for a shot at the championship — which will be played two days later at Konawaena.

Just like DII, both the BIIF DI winner and runner-up will receive a bid in the HHSAA DI State playoffs— which will also take place at several different O‘ahu schools.
