Misao “Nancy” Yamada, age 98, of Hilo, Hawaii, died March 3, 2023 in the Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Hilo, Hawaii on December 3, 1924 and retired as the Assistant Branch Manager of Bank of Hawaii Downtown Hilo Branch. She was a member of the Zonta Club of Hilo and American Heart Association. Private services held. No flowers. No Koden (monetary offerings). She is survived by son, Les Miyasato of Hilo; sister, Masae Lum of Honolulu; sister-in-law, Kay Matsumoto of Hilo; grandchildren, Kelly (Steven) Okoji of Kailua-Kona and Shayn (Clement) Santiago of Kailua-Kona; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Satoshi Sumiki
Mr. Satoshi “Sato” Sumiki, age 85, of Hilo, Hawaii, died March 4, 2023 at his residence. He was born in Papaikou on August 28, 1937 and worked as a gas attendant at the former Smiley’s Service Station in Hilo before retiring from a career at Isemoto Contracting Company as a Carpenter. Visitation will be held at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo on March 31, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Casual attire is requested. No flowers. Bruce Tong, Jr
Bruce Bung Lum Tong, Jr., 70, of Mountain View, died March 5, 2023, at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a fish peddler, fisherman, diver, farmer, hunter and talented harmonica player. Friends may call at 9 a.m. April 7, 2023 at Olaa First Hawaiian Congregational Church, 17-514 Hale Pule Loop, Kurtistown, for a 10 a.m. service with reception to follow at noon. Janette Jane Carreira, 87, of Honomu, Passed away on March 8, 2023, in Hilo. Alfredo Gacula, Jr
Alfredo Manglallan Gacula, Jr., 81, of Honokaa, Passed away peacefully on March 10, 2023 at home. Born on Aug. 15, 1941, in Marcos, Ilocos Norte, Philippines; he worked for the Hamakua Sugar Company in Paauilo and retired as a Welder for the Parker Ranch in Waimea. He also was a member of the Honokaa United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Honokaa United Methodist Church. He is survived by wife Teresita of Honokaa; children, Marissa Gacula (Jesse) Rowell of Bothell, Washington and Glen Gacula of Snohomish, Washington; six grandchildren, brother, Jessie (Helen) Gacula of Keaau; sisters, Imelda Arreola, Pilarina Passion and Cionita Salazar of Honolulu, Annie Isidro of San Diego, California, Lynda Fernandez of Los Angeles, California and Rosita Flores of Philippines; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
