A 73-year-old California man suffered critical injuries following a single-vehicle crash Thursday at the intersection of Henry and Hale Kapili streets in North Kona.
The man has not been positively identified.
Responding to a 11:31 a.m. call, police determined that a green 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck was turning left onto Henry Street when it struck the 73-year-old man who was crossing Henry Street in a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The driver of the 2022 Dodge Ram pickup truck, 39-year-old Graham Allen Racine, of Kailua-Kona, fled the scene after striking the pedestrian, however, later turned himself in at the Kealakehe Police Station.
Racine was arrested for first-degree negligent injury, failure to render aid, accident involving substantial bodily injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. Racine remains in custody at the Kealakehe Police Station while the investigation is continuing.
Police believe that speed and impairment are possible factors in the collision.
