A county council committee voted in support of repealing an archaic part of the county code regulating dance halls.
On Tuesday, the council Committee on Planning, Land Use and Development briefly discussed a proposal by Hilo Councilwoman Jenn Kagiwada to remove a passage of the county code that sets requirements for the licensing of dance halls.
The passage, which hasn’t been updated since 1937, includes a series of antiquated requirements, including banning the sale of alcohol at dance halls and a prohibition on “undue familiarity” between dance partners. Kagiwada also said that the council has not received any license applications for dance halls in years.
The committee voted unanimously to recommend the measure to the full council with little discussion.
