HVNP announces early February events

February events at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park include a Hawaiian carving demonstration, talks starring the rare and unique species and habitats the park protects, in addition to ranger-led programs, Kahuku coffee talks and more. All events are free, but entrance fees may apply.

At 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium will host “Monitoring Seabirds in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park” as part of the ongoing After Dark in the Park program. The ‘ua‘u (Hawaiian petrel) and the ‘ake‘ake (band-rumped storm petrel) are seabirds that spend most of their lives on the open ocean, coming to land only to breed. These endangered species nest in burrows on the barren lava flows of Mauna Loa within the park. Join Charlotte Forbes Perry, biologist with the University of Hawaii Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit and Michelle Reynolds and Slater, of Hawaii Detector Dogs, to share what they found during the 2022 seabird monitoring system. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s ongoing After Dark in the Park programs.

From 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 8, learn to carve Hawaiian-style. Hawaiians carved ki‘i (statues) to represent forces of nature, guardians and the spirit world. Acclaimed artist James Kanani Kaulukukui Jr., who has worked on the sacred site of Ke Kahua O Kaneiolouma Heiau on Kauai, will share his expertise and the essential role ki‘i played in Hawaiian society. The event, part of the ongoing ‘Ike Hana Noeau (Experience the Skillful Work) Hawaiian cultural programs, will be held in the Ohia Wing (across Crater Rim Drive from Kilauea Visitor Center).

A Walk into the Past with Dr. Thomas A. Jaggar takes place at 10 a.m. and noon on Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 starting at the Kilauea Visitor Center. Dressed in period costume, actor Dick Hershberger brings the renowned geologist to life. Space is limited; pick up a free ticket at the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai the day of the program.

Stewardship at the Summit Rainforest Restoration takes place starting at 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 4, 10, 17 and 25 at the Kilauea Visitor Center. Volunteer to help remove invasive, non-native plant species that prevent native plants from growing in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
