Valentine Gonsalves
Valentine “Val” Ricky Gonsalves, 60, of Hilo, died on Sept. 1, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 12, 1961, in Honolulu, he was a self-employed maintenance/janitorial contractor and worked for C.W. Maintenance, Ono Gourmet, and other places of employment.
Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., eulogy at 9:15, on Oct. 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hilo, with funeral Mass to follow. Casual attire.
He is survived by sons, Ikaika Gonsalves of Hilo and Kalani Gonsalves of Pepeekeo; companion, Marcella Lee of Hilo; sisters, Antoinette Amii of Hilo, Olinda Diana (Jeffrey) De Rego of Honokaa, and Verlann Gonsalves of Honokaa; brothers, Don (Francine) Gonsalves Jr. of Paradise Park, and Tony (Peggie) Gonsalves of Mountain View; a granddaughter; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

William Aina
William “Bill” Kawahalama Aina, 82, of Keaukaha, died Sept. 7, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Nov. 3, 1939, in Hilo, he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward, and a retired custodian for the state Department of Education, formerly employed at Hilo Iron Works, Kama’aina Motors, and Dodo Mortuary Life Plan, and was a longtime member of the Boy Scouts of America, Pukahi District and Troop 7, Keaukaha Ward.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Hilo Stake Center, service at 11:30 a.m.; burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section. Casual attire.

Lawrence Sousa
Lawrence “Larry” Daniel Sousa, 73, of Hilo, died May 24, 2022, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired mechanical engineer for Hawaii County Department of Water Supply, had also worked for Hawaii County Wastewater Division, former Hilo Coast Processing Company and others and was a member of Tenrikyo Kilauea Church, Saint Joseph Catholic Church and Hilo Yacht Club.
Private services were held.
He is survived by wife, Emma Sousa of Hilo; brother, Edwin Sousa of Hilo; niece, Caroline Sousa of Hilo; in-laws, Mae Takamoto of Keaau, James (Sandra) Hamano of Hilo, Miles Hamano of Honolulu, Don Nakamura of Hilo, Suk Hui Hamano of Korea, and Charity Hamano of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Brent Matsuda
Brent Kaoru Matsuda, 61, of Honokaa, died Sept. 11, 2022, at Kona Community Hospital. He was born in Hamakua and was a retired fire rescue captain with the Hawaii County Fire Department and was also a member of the Honokaa Lions Club.
Visitation and potluck memorial gathering 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Hapuna Beach State Park; memorial service at noon. Casual attire; no flowers.
He is survived by daughter, Meghann Matsuda of Kapaa; son, Douglas Matsuda of Honokaa; two grandsons, Ezekiel Rita and Kamana’o Matsuda; and nieces and nephews.

Gregory Isabel
Gregory “Greg” Kalani Santa Isabel, 53, of Hilo, died Sept. 6, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born June 19, 1969, in Honolulu, he worked for a towing company in Hawaii.
Friends may call on Oct. 1 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, visitation from 9 to 11 a.m.; celebration of life at 11 a.m. Casual attire. Flowers and lei are welcomed.
