KEALAKEKUA – Of all the talented playmakers in Konawaena’s lineup – and there are many – Zedekiah Anahu-Ambrosio just might turn out to be the best of the bunch.
The Wildcats’ sophomore sensation stood head and shoulders above the rest in Thursday night’s dominant 86-0 victory over crosstown rival Kealakehe, reaching the end zone four times – one rushing, twice receiving, and one on a punt return – and throwing for another touchdown.
All in a game’s work.
Well, half a game’s work. With the Wildcat lead standing at 72 points, Anahu-Ambrosio’s day was over by halftime.
“He’s just a dynamic kid,” said Konawaena’s head coach Brad Uemoto. “We move him all around the field. He’s got two Division I offers; you can see why.”
“Just having fun and putting points on the board; that’s what I’ve been doing since I was young,” added Anahu-Ambrosio, who was quick to spread the credit among his teammates. “Thank you to all my O-line and my quarterback Keoki (Alani).”
Alani threw for three touchdowns on the night, finding Anahu-Ambrosio twice in the first quarter in addition to a 42-yard scoring strike to Jacob Ah Mook Sang in the second quarter.
Kawelu Kaiawe ran for a pair of scores, as did Nakoa Hing. Austin Takaki was on the receiving end of Anahu-Ambrosio’s touchdown pass, and a pair of defensive touchdowns – one on a fumble recovery by Jarom Alani and another on a pick-six by Trez Uemoto – accounted for all 12 Konawaena touchdowns.
A pair of first-quarter safeties – the first on a Chray Flanary sack and the second on a Takaki tackle – rounded out the Wildcats 86-0 night, which ties a Konawaena school record for largest margin of victory, according to Uemoto, matching an 86-0 victory over Pahoa in 1985.
“We’re going to give every opponent our best; that’s respect to our opponent,” said Uemoto. “Kealakehe’s going to get better because of it. I know we’re on different ends of our seasons right now, but they’re going to keep fighting. They’re going to be better next year; they’re a young group.”
