Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Race: Outrigger Canoe Club and Kai Ehitu canoe club win women’s divisions; Team Wailea and Team Oceania – Querido win men’s divisions in 18-mile long distance race
KAILUA-KONA – Under pristine conditions, Hawaii finally welcomed the world back to the largest long-distance outrigger race on the planet.
KAILUA-KONA – Under pristine conditions, Hawaii finally welcomed the world back to the largest long-distance outrigger race on the planet.
“If there was a perfect way to bring this race back after a two-year pandemic pause, today was the day to do it, said Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Race Director Mike Atwood in a statement. “The water was perfect, weather was perfect, we started the race on time. It was just a great day all the way around. It was a great way to honor Queen Liliuokalani.”
A total of 243 canoes – 128 women and mixed, and 115 men – representing Australia, Canada, French Polynesia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States took advantage of near-perfect conditions at the Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Race’s signature 18-mile long distance race on Saturday.
The women and mixed crews took off from Kailua Bay at 7:30 a.m., with Outrigger Canoe Club winning the Iron Non Koa Open Division (no crew changes) in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 9 seconds, while Kai Ehitu earned the win in the Iron Unlimited Division with their finish of 2:17:28.
Hui Waa O Waiakea notched a victory for the Big Island in the Iron Koa Open Division, crossing the line in 2:41:13.
When it was the men’s turn to take off at 11:45 a.m. in Honaunau Bay, a Big Island crew also took first in their Iron Koa Open Division, beating the crew from Honaunau by 50 seconds with a finish of 2:05:06.
Team Wailea posted the fastest finish of the day, winning the men’s Iron Non Koa Open Division in a time of 1:51:46. Close behind Wailea was Team Oceania – Querido, whose finish of 1:52:05 saw them take first place in the Iron Unlimited Division.
The Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Races will continue Sunday and Monday. The Teen, Waa Kaulua, OC1 and OC2 races are set to begin at 7 a.m. Sunday, while the Kupuna Classic will be the finale on Monday.
