BIIF Cross Country: Kealakehe’s Childers, Hilo’s Halpern win for second week in a row

Kealakehe’s Levi Childers and Hilo’s Kekaihulalu Halpern each won their second race in a row Saturday morning at Hawaii Prep.

On the boys’ side, Kealakehe and Waiakea combined to take the top six finishes – Kealakehe’s Childers in first, Cameron Cornforth in fourth and Aiden Ankrum in fifth, Waiakea’s Shane Tominaga in second, Austin Mohica in third, and Rogelio Doratt in sixth – with Waiakea defeating Kealakehe in the team scores by the narrowest of margins. Waiakea’s boys team took first with 38 points, one ahead of Kealakehe’s 39 points.

Halpern finished nearly a minute ahead of second-place finisher Cozette Wood of Kealakehe, leading the way for a Hilo team victory. The Vikings score of 46 beat out Hawaii Prep by six and Waiakea by 10.

Joining Halpern and Wood in the top five were Waiakea’s Shanay Haa, Hawaii Prep’s Bella Dadzie and Makua Lani’s Sofia Mattix.

Big Island runners will be heading to Kamehameha next week.
