Galaxy ride Grandsir’s brace to 5-2 romp over Whitecaps
CARSON, Calif. — Samuel Grandsir scored two of Los Angeles’ four first-half goals to spark the Galaxy to a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.
Grandsir, who came into the match with one goal this season, scored in the 12th minute to stake Los Angeles (10-11-3) to an early lead.
Javier Hernández Balcázar, who goes by Chicharito, scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute for a two-goal lead and then fed Víctor Vázquez for a goal in the 30th to put the Galaxy up 3-0. Chicharito has a team-high 10 goals this season, while Vazquez’s was his first.
Ryan Gauld scored in the 38th minute for Vancouver (8-11-6), but Grandsir finished off his brace two minutes later and the Galaxy led 4-1 at intermission.
Tosaint Ricketts had a goal in the second half for the Whitecaps, who lost Cristian Dájome to a red card in the 79th.
Efraín Álvarez scored in the 89th minute to end the scoring for L.A.
Jonathan Bond had two saves for the Galaxy. Cody Cropper saved two for Vancouver.
LAFC 5, CHARLOTTE FC 0
LOS ANGELES — Jesús Murillo scored early in the second half and Los Angeles FC did all its damage after intermission to pick up its sixth straight victory in a 5-0 rout of Charlotte FC on Saturday night.
Murillo gave LAFC (17-4-3) the lead for good in the 49th minute. José Cifuentes scored — his seventh — unassisted 10 minutes later and then assisted on Carlos Vela’s eighth goal in the 73rd for a 3-0 lead. Cristian Arango’s team-high 12th goal of the season made it 4-0 three minutes later.
LAFC’s final score came on an own-goal by Charlotte (9-14-2) defender Anton Walkes in the second minute of stoppage time.
Maxime Crépeau made two saves to earn a clean sheet for LAFC. Kristijan Kahlina saved four shots for Charlotte, which has lost two straight and four of its last five.
TORONTO FC 3, PORTLAND 1
TORONTO — Italian newcomers Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi scored late goals and Toronto FC beat Portland 3-1 on Saturday night to end the Timbers’ unbeaten streak at 10 games.
Captain Michael Bradley set up Insigne’s tiebreaking goal in the 79th minute, scooping the ball into the penalty box toward Insigne.
After a save by Portland goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic on substitute Ayo Akinola, Bernardeschi scored on curling left-footer in the 85th.
Toronto FC (8-12-5) is 3-0-1 since the Italian duo took the field. Bernardeschi (three goals and two assists) and Insigne (two goals and one assist) have been involved in eight of Toronto’s last 10 goals.
“Look, these guys bring some special qualities,” Toronto coach Bob Bradley said. “When you have good players, it doesn’t take long for other good players to size them up.”
Jonathan Osorio scored for Toronto in the 41st minute. Josecarlos Van Rankin tied it for Portland (7-7-12) in the 73rd with his first MLS goal.
Portland was 4-0-6 during the streak.
“It’s painful, but I think there’s a lot to learn from this game,” Portland coach Giovanni Savarese said. “I believe we played a decent match. I felt that in moments not everyone was putting the same amount of work that needed to be put in. Nevertheless, we were still able to defend well the majority of time and create moments offensively.”
COLORADO 1, COLUMBUS 1
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Diego Rubio scored on a penalty kick late in the first half to help the Colorado Rapids earn a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday.
Cucho Hernández scored just five minutes into the match to give Columbus (8-6-10) an early lead. Hernández has six goals in his eight games with the Crew. Pedro Santos had an assist on the score.
Rubio’s 12th goal of the season for Colorado (8-9-7) came in the 41st minute.
The Crew took 14 shots, two more than the Rapids, and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Eloy Room had two saves for Columbus. William Yarbrough saved four for Colorado.
FC DALLAS 4, SAN JOSE 1
FRISCO, Texas — Jesús Ferreira scored twice in the first half and FC Dallas breezed to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.
Ferreira took a pass from Alan Velasco just three minutes into the match and scored to give Dallas (10-7-9) the early lead.
Marco Farfan notched his first goal of the season, scoring in the 20th minute, and Ferreira polished off a brace in the 41st with his 14th goal to give Dallas a 3-0 halftime lead.
Velasco found the net in the 57th minute with his fourth goal of the campaign to stretch the lead to 4-0 before Jeremy Ebobisse put San Jose (5-11-9) on the scoreboard with a goal — his 14th — three minutes later.
Maarten Paes finished with one save for Dallas. JT Marcinkowski had two saves for the Earthquakes.
CF MONTREAL 3, HOUSTON 2
HOUSTON — Lassi Lappalainen scored the only goal of the second half and CF Montreal held off the Houston Dynamo 3-2 on Saturday.
Lappalainen found the net in the 69th minute — with an assist from Joaquín Torres — for his second goal this season for Montreal (13-8-4).
Sebastián Ferreira gave Houston (7-14-4) a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with his eighth goal of the season, but Romell Quioto scored on a penalty kick for Montreal three minutes later to tie the match.
Alistair Johnston scored in the 28th minute to give Montreal a 2-1 lead, but Daniel Steres answered for the Dynamo in the 36th to send the game to halftime tied at 2-2.
James Pantemis saved two shots for Montreal. Steve Clark had four saves for Houston, which has lost four straight.
AUSTIN FC 4, SPORTING KANSAS CITY 3
AUSTIN, Texas — Sebastián Driussi scored his league-leading 17th goal of the season four minutes into second-half stoppage time and Austin FC survived an upset bid by Sporting Kansas City with a 4-3 victory on Saturday.
Austin (14-5-6) trailed 3-1 at halftime after Sporting KC (6-15-5) got goals from Andreu Fontàs in the 12th minute, William Agada in the 23rd and a penalty-kick score by Johnny Russell in the 40th.
Julio Cascante found the net in the 63rd minute to get Austin within a goal and Danny Hoesen knotted the score at 3-3 when he scored in the 83rd.
Driussi received a yellow card for excessive celebration after his go-ahead score. He has a two-goal lead in the race for the Golden Boot.
Jon Gallagher had a goal in the first half for Austin.
Brad Stuver had four saves for Austin. John Pulskamp stopped four shots for Sporting KC.
INTER MIAMI 3, NEW YORK CITY FC 2
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Alejandro Pozuelo scored his first two goals of the season, including the match-winner in the 84th minute, and Inter Miami rallied to beat New York City FC 3-2 on Saturday.
NYCFC (12-6-6) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute on Talles Magno’s sixth goal of the season.
Pozuelo found the net for the first time in his six matches with the team when he took a pass from Bryce Duke and scored in the 39th minute to pull Inter Miami (9-10-6) even.
Thiago Andrade gave NYCFC a 2-1 halftime lead when he scored — his fifth — in the second minute of stoppage time.
Ariel Lassiter scored in the 63rd minute for Miami — with assists from Pozuelo and Gonzalo Higuaín — to knot the score at 2-2.
Drake Callender saved three shots for Inter Miami. Sean Johnson had three saves for NYCFC.
NEW ENGLAND 1, D.C. UNITED 0
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Carles Gil staked the New England Revolution to an early lead and Djordje Petrovic made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday.
Gil scored in the 18th minute to give New England (8-7-9) the lead for good. Brandon Bye and Tommy McNamara had assists on Gil’s fifth score of the season.
The Revolution took 20 shots, seven more than D.C. United (6-14-4), and had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. United fell to 1-2-1 under coach Wayne Rooney.
Petrovic had three saves to post a clean sheet for New England. Rafael Romo finished with six saves for United.
PHILADELPHIA 4, CHICAGO 1
CHESTER, Pa. — Dániel Gazdag gave Philadelphia an early lead and the Union cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
Gazdag scored his 12th goal of the season to give Philadelphia (13-3-9) a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
Defender Jack Elliott picked up his first goal of the campaign, scoring unassisted in the 41st minute to give the Union a 2-0 halftime lead.
Chris Mueller scored four minutes into the second half to get Chicago (8-11-6) within a goal. Xherdan Shaqiri and Federico Navarro had assists on Mueller’s fourth goal this season.
Julián Carranza quickly pushed the Union’s lead back to two with a goal __ his ninth __ in the 53rd minute and Cory Burke capped the scoring with a score — his fifth — in the 82nd.
Andre Blake had six saves for the Union. Gaga Slonina saved three for the Fire.

HARRISON, N.J. — Facundo Torres scored early and goalkeeper Pedro Gallese made it stand up as Orlando City blanked the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Saturday.
Torres staked Orlando City (10-10-6) to a lead in the 17th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Júnior Urso and Alexandre Pato notched assists on the score.
Gallese made one save to help end a three-match losing streak. Orlando’s last win was a 1-0 decision over Inter Miami on July 9. Orlando had gone 0-3-2 since then..
Carlos Miguel Coronel failed to make a save for the Red Bulls (10-9-7).
New York outshot Orlando 15-2, but both teams only had one shot on goal.
