Julie Shimasaki

Julie Marianne Shimasaki, 61, of Hilo, died June 30, 2022 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 16, 1960, in San Diego, she was employed by the State of Hawaii as a licensed practical nurse at Hilo Medical Center.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 13 at Wailoa River State Park Pavilion #1 in Hilo.

She is survived by son, John Shimasaki of Hilo; daughters, Allison Shimasaki, Amanda Shimasaki and Keona Johnson, all of Hilo; seven grandchildren; and an uncle.

Mae Nirei

Mae Michiko Nirei, 89, of Hilo died July 13, 2022, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in Hilo, she was a retired office clerk at the Hilo Medical Center, member of Hilo Hooganji Mission, Central Komohana Kumiai and the Kamana Senior Center Line Dancing and Japanese Exercise Group.

Visitation from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at Dodo Mortuary chapel; funeral service at 4:30. Casual attire.

She is survived by children, Miles (Kathleen) Nirei of Kaneohe, Oahu, and Kurt Nirei, Guy (Verdean) Nirei and Donna (Kyle) Tengan, all of Hilo; hanai daughter, Lynn (Joseph) Gusman of Kona; siblings, Yoshimi Nakayama of Hilo, Minoru (Elaine) Nakayama of Kaneohe, Oahu, George Nakayama of Honolulu, and Alice (John) Moses of Hilo; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
