Althea Himan

Althea “Tia” Jean Himan, 64, of Pahoa, died June 10, 2022 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 16, 1957 in Ka’u, she was a former security screener for Wackenhut Security and a custodian for Kaumana Elementary School.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. July 17 at Dodo Mortuary chapel; service at 6. Graveside committal service will be held at noon July 18 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion. Casual attire.

She is survived by children, Marcia (Rev. Randy) Romer of Waikoloa, Christopher (Christy Domingo) Himan Jr. of Mountain View and Teresa (Robert) Pickens of Keaau; step-mother, Cecelia Galigo of Ka’u; brothers, Roy (Kathy) Galigo of Hilo, William B. Atiz Jr. of Oahu, Marlon (Shawna) Galigo of Kona and George Galigo and Tedy Galigo, both of Ka’u; sisters, Dorinda (Adam) Camara of Waikoloa, Vicky Mattos of Hilo, Leilani Galigo of Hilo, Athena (Morgan) Benevides of Oahu and Lorna Galigo of Ka’u; mother-in-law, Betty Lou Capuano of Waimea; brother-in-law, Danny (Terri) Ireland of Waikoloa; sisters-in-law, Betty Ann (Augie) Fiesta of Kailua, Oahu, Wendy Kamaka of Oahu and Antoinette Capuano of Waimea; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunties, uncles and cousins.

William Derasin

William “Bill” Derasin, 88, of Naalehu, died June 8, 2022 at his residence. Born Dec. 29, 1933 in Pahoa, he was a welding professor at University of Hawaii-Hilo and proprietor of 3D Welding and B&E Propane prior to retirement.

Friends may call for visitation from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 15 at Ballard Family Mortuary. Friends may also call at 9 a..m. July 16 Kauahaao Church in Waiohinu for a 10 a.m. service. Burial to follow at Naalehu Cemetery.

He is survived by spouse, Eleanor Derasin; step-mother, Anna Quigao of Pahoa; son, Michael (Faith) Derasin of Waiohinu; daughters, Elizabeth (David Poe) Derasin of Ocean View, and Sharlene (Clarence Alcoran) DeCoito of Naalehu; brothers, James (Florence) Kawaihae and Clarence (Anna Hampton) Derasin, all of California, and Albert Derasin of Las Vegas; sisters, Dolores Pacheco of Las Vegas, Virginia (Clement) Ortiz of California, Sweetland Derasin of California, and Janice (Jermaine Calhoun) Quigao of Oregon; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Shoniro Yano

Shoniro Yano, 95, of Honokaa, died June 27, 2022, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Kawaihae, he was a retired U.S. Army National Guard first sergeant, member and past kyodan president of the Honokaa Hongwanji Mission, and member of the Big Island National Guard Retirees Assocation and the Hamakua Country Club.

Private services held. No koden (monetary offerings).

He is survived by wife, Maria Yano of Honokaa; sons, Lloyd Yano of San Diego, Al (Germaine Brodo-Yano) Yano of Hilo and Stacy (Selina) Yano of Las Vegas; brother, Yoshiro (Pat) Yano of Honolulu; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
