The Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise recently awarded one Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation/Weinberg Scholarship and four scholarships from the Kona Sunrise Club (Francis Kualani and Dr. Cliff Kopp Memorial Scholarships) totaling $9,000 to four outstanding local area high school students.
Criteria for selection are based on scholastic and academic achievements, personal involvement in campus, community activities, employment experience and financial need.
The following scholarships were awarded for 2022:
• Camylle McDonald, Kealakehe High School, will attend Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech); she received $5,000 from the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation/Weinberg Scholarship. She also received $1,000 from the Francis Kualani and the Dr. Cliff Kopp Scholarships.
• Sita Hale, Kealakehe High School, will attend University of Hawaii at Hilo; she received $1,000 from the Francis Kualani and Dr. Cliff Kopp Memorial Scholarships.
• Finnigan Morton, Kealakehe High School will attend Loyola Marymount University at Los Angeles; he received $1,000 from the Francis Kualani and Dr. Cliff Kopp Memorial Scholarships
• Jayda Decker, Kealakehe High School, will attend University of Hawaii at Manoa; she received $1,000 from the Francis Kualani and Dr. Cliff Kopp Memorial Scholarships
The Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation was founded by Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan during his year as the Rotary’s District Governor in Hawaii, 1976-77. It was Sullivan’s desire to assist Hawaii’s high school graduates realize their potential by attending a college or university of their choice here in Hawaii or on the mainland United States.
Kopp and Kualani were prominent members and supporters of the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise and their scholarships reflect their continued commitment to island youth.
