Roots Skate Park marks Go Skateboarding Day with parade, community fundraising event
Roots Skatepark held a special “Go Skate Day” event Sunday as the nonprofit behind the effort continues to raise funds for future expansion of the North Kohala skatepark.
Sunday’s event featured a skateboarder parade on Akoni Pule Highway from Kynnersley Road to the skatepark within Kamehameha Park, where festivities continued locally sourced food and drinks, live music, an auction of donated local services, a raffle for prizes, and more.
There was also best trick contest with four divisions to provide attendees with some impressive displays of skateboarding’s best athletes.
Roots Skatepark, which is nearing completion of Phase 2, is a project of 501(c)(3) Roots Advocates for Youth and its volunteer committee. The group is in its 15th year of community fundraising with money needed to complete the second phase, as well as for the complete third phase. At full build-out, the BMX-style skatepark will cover 13,000 square feet at Hawaii County’s Kamehameha Park.
The event was held in conjunction with events planned across the U.S. on June 21, which is Go Skateboarding Day. Go Skateboarding Day was created by the International Association of Skateboard Companies in 2004, to promote events in major cities around the world to help make skateboarding more accessible.
