Victoria Luke

Victoria “Meme” Chen Luke, 100, of Laupahoehoe, and formerly of Bellevue, Washington died May 16, 2022, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, she was a homemaker and member of the Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission.

No local services. Services will take place at a later date in Bellevue, Washington.

She is survived by daughters, Carrie Luke-Knotts of Laupahoehoe, Cathy (Brandon Lerda) Chow of Talent, Oregon, and Pamela (Ron) Okubo of Camas, Washington; sons, Lowell (Ruth) Luke of Newport, Oregon, and Peter (Sunny) Luke of Bellevue, Washington; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard Karasuda

Richard Minoru Karasuda, 80, of Pahala, died May 22, 2022, at his residence. Born in Pahala, he was a U.S. Airforce veteran, former U.S. Postal Service worker, and Recreation Director for the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation’s Na’alehu Community Center.

Private pre-cremation service held. Celebration of life at 10 a.m. July 2 at the Pahala Community Center.

He is survived by companion, Lucy Makuakane; daughters, Jahaslyn Noella (Vincent Hashimoto) Karasuda, and Jashil Karasuda; sons, Jaffar (Ashtin) Karasuda, and Christian Castillo-Kamei; stepchildren, Cylynn Kamei, Chasity (Douglas) Santiago, Chaslyn (Donald Garo Sr.) Kamei, Clifford (Kavelle) Kamei Jr., and Clifftin (Irene) Kamei; sisters, Lorraine Karasuda and Nancy Karasuda; and numerous grandchildren.

Gloria Wisener

Gloria Claudette Wisener, 79, Hilo, died June 12, 2022, at her resience. She was a former food services employee and member of St. Joseph Church, Papaikou Senior Club, and the ILWU.

Friends may call at from 10 to 11 a.m. June 20 at Dodo Mortuary for visitation only; cremation to follow at Dodo Mortuary Crematory. Friends may also call at 4 p.m. June 27 at Dodo Mortuary for a 6 p.m. service.

She is survived by daughters, Delna Strong of Hilo, Charmaine Strong of Mountain View, Janice Morton of Waimea and Franklina Strong-Aceves of Los Angeles; stepsons, John Wisener Jr. and Joel Wisener of Tustin, California; sister, Josephine Cox of Hilo; brother, Felix Dagoro of Hilo; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nehpews and cousins.

Maxima Gatchalian

Maxima “Aida” Adelaida Simpao Gatchalian, 77, of Hilo, died June 8, 2022 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Oct. 16, 1944 in Manila, Philippines, she was a retired certified nursing assistant and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the Filipino Community Center in Grover Beach, California.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. June 20 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Visitation will continue from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 21 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Papaikou. Mass at 11:30 a.m.; burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section. Casual attire.

She is survived by daughter, Valerie (Christopher) Parayno of Hilo; son, Raymond Gatchalian of California; brother, Jose (Elsie) Simpao of California; sisters, Julieta Apilado of California and Mila (Anil) Kumar of South Carolina; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ronald Hart

Ronald Lee Hart, 82, of Mountain View, died June 4, 2022, at his residence. Born in San Jose, California, he was the retired director of development and public relations with Hospice of Hilo.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a celebration of life.Casual attire; no flowers.

He is survived by partner, Jan Kusnierczyk of Mountain View.
