Taichi Isono

Taichi “Tai” Isono, 95, of Hilo died May 22, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pahoa, he was the retired owner of the former Tai’s Painting and a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Private services were held. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary offerings).

She is survived by children, Lynn (Stefan) Kelemen of Claremont, California, Myrna Mizer of Yorba Linda, California, Cindy (Clyde) Sakoda of Hilo, and Randall (Jackie) Isono of San Diego; brother, Katsuichi (Miyuki) Isono of Kaneohe, Oahu; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John Beere

John Ernest Beere, 77, of Hilo, died May 17, 2022 at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. Born Aug. 5, 1944 in Adelaide, Australia, he was a retired major for the Australian Army and worked for Destination Hilo.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. June 15 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 10 a.m. service; cremation to follow. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Rev. Billie Keawekane-Beere of Hilo; son, Eric (Sandra Reina) Beere of Adelaide, Australia; daughter, Josephine (Ryan Harbey) Beere of Adelaide, Australia; step-son, Ronney (Maileen) Keawekane of Hilo; brother, Robert (Maureen) Beere of Tasmania; sister, Beverley (John) Coggins of Adelaide, Australia; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Samuel Castillo

Samuel “Uncle Sonny” Buentipo Castillo, 73, Hilo, died June 7, 2022 at his residence. Born Aug. 28, 1948, in Balais, Lagangilang, Abra, he worked for the former Hilo Coast Processing Co., and was a retired car salesman for Chevrolet and Hilo Mazda Subaru Dealership in Hilo, founder and organizer of the Filipino Basketball Association, radio announcer at KPUA, and a basketball referee for the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Allyson Kaua

Allyson Leiko Nohealani Kaua, 60, of Kailua-Kona died June 9, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. Born Sept. 23, 1961, in Hilo, she was an accountant.

She is survived by husband, Alfred Kaua; sons, Fred Kaua and Jason Kaua; daughters, Crystal Kaua and Jenna Kaua, all of Kailua-Kona; father, Raymond Hasegawa of Oahu; mother, Abigail Kahalewai of Waikoloa.

Richard Oldfield

Richard Carr Oldfield, 84, of Hilo, died May 19, 2022, at his residence. Born Oct. 16, 1937 in Waynesboro, Mississippi, he worked as a builder and building designer.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. June 17 at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo on June 17 for an 11 a.m. service.

He is survived by spouse, Frances Oldfield of Hilo; son, Mark (Teresa) Oldfield of Sacramento; daughter, Valeneia (Rick) Thompson of Mission Viejo, California; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

Stanberson Mitchell

Stanberson “Bubu” “Mitch” K.P. Mitchell, 56, of Waimea, died May 29, 2022 at his residence. Born Oct. 14, 1965, in Hilo, he was a bartender and banquet porter at the Fairmont Orchid at Mauna Lani, member of Wailani Canoe Club, Johnny Lum Ho’s hula halau, Halau Ka Ua Kanilehua and a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by sisters, Sheila Roy and Marilyn Mitchell, both of Waimea, Marlene (Lyle) Thomas of California, Henrilyn (Gordon) Grace of Opihihale, and Clerilene Mitchell of Hilo; brothers, Stareyton (Nina) Mitchell of Honopua and Clebertan Mitchell of Hilo; hanai brothers, Alfred (Rochelle) Berdon Jr., Bruce (Genie) Nishie and Mack Yamaguchi, all of Waimea; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sachiko Ishihara

Sachiko Ishihara, 92, of Honokaa, died May 27, 2022, in Hilo. Born in Honokaa, she was a retired cafeteria worker with Honokaa School, and member of Honokaa Hongwanji Mission and the Honokaa Senior Center.

She is survived by daughter, Ann Chong of Keaau; sons, Tad (LeeAnn) Ishihara of Hilo, and Jon (Laura) Ishihara and Roy (Pam) Ishihara of Honolulu; six grandchildren; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

James Acol Sr.

James Nobino Acol Sr., 79, of Kailua-Kona died May 31, 2022 at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born Nov. 1, 1942, in Wahiawa, Oahu, he was a retired painter at the Royal Kona Resort, avid fisherman and diver, and member of the Monday Mixed Bowling League, Wednesday Night Mixed Nuts League, TGIF Bowling League and St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. June 25 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona; Mass at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by sons, James (Rebecca) Acol Jr. of Crestview, Florida, Jacey Acol of Kailua-Kona and Reed (Malinda) Acol of Hood River, Oregon; daughter, Neivbea (Todd) Zane of Kealakekua; sisters, Octavia Muraoka of Kalaoa, Kona, Olivia Sasada of Kailua-Kona, and Judy DeMello of Holualoa; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Makiko Ohashi

Makiko Ohashi, 101, of Mountain View, died May 22, 2022 at a private care home in Hilo. Born April 1, 1921, in Mountain View, she was a cafeteria worker at Hilo High School, and retired from Mountain View Elementary and Intermediate School as cafeteria manager, an avid bowler, and member of the Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.), East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings).

She is survived by son, Glenn (Kathy Isherwood) Ohashi of Hilo; daughters, Arleen Ogasawara of Kaneohe, Oahu, and Iris (Ryan Camero) Ohashi of Hilo; brothers, Tatsuo Higa of Honolulu, George (Joyce) Higa of Hilo, James Higa of Kauai, Richard Higa of San Gabriel, California and Reginald Higa of Alaska; sisters, Yaeko Chung and Chieko Toyama, both of Honolulu and Jeanne (Kenneth) Wong of Mililani, Oahu; sister-in-law, Aiko Fujimoto of Hilo; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Kaiminaauao Puaoi

Kaiminaauao S.N.F.A. Puaoi, 43, of Holualoa, died May 24, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. He was the proprietor of Mana Painting LLC and a teacher for the Alii Surf School.

Friends may call at 11 a.m. Aug. 13 at Pahoehoe Beach Park for a service.

He is survived by spouse, Sarah Puaoi; maternal grandmother, Winona Wong; daughter, Kalei Espinueva-Puaoi; son, Jaden Puaoi; and brothers, Ethan Baiz and Kanoa Baiz.
