Kohala is calling everyone with connections to the isolated northern district to a three-day celebration over the Fourth of July weekend.
The giant homecoming takes place every five years — this is the fifth although postponed for two years by the pandemic. Families of North Kohala residents, former and current residents, high school graduates, everyone with connections to the district are invited to celebrate the rich history of the area with music, local foods, tours and exhibits.
Kohala ‘Aina Ha’aheo — Kohala Land of the Proud — is the motto for the events scheduled for July 2 to 4 at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au. Times are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Daily hula and musical performances, exhibits, lectures, demonstrations, as well as guided tours of historical places will connect to Kohala’s past, present, and future.
Beside the traditional tug of war, other sports and demonstrations will be held. Contests for the best baked and prepared food favorites will be judged all three days. Booths will sell a variety of cultural foods. July 4 will be Ohana Day – Families are Our Future.
The home-grown project is supported by early registration of families both in Kohala and away, donations, and the generous support of the Hawai’i Tourism Authority through its Community Enrichment Program. Kohala Reunion is a sponsored project of the North Kohala Community Resource Center.
