DOH approves reopening of Sumo Deli
A Kailua-Kona eatery has reopened after a follow-up inspection determined all critical food safety violations were corrected.
The state Department of Health reported Friday its Food Safety Branch issued Sumo Deli in the Lanihau Shopping Center a “green” placard, allowing for the business to reopen.
The department issued Sumo Deli a red placard on May 26, forcing the immediate closure of the restaurant.
According to the state, there were imminent health hazards caused by wastewater backing up into the kitchen; potential cross-contamination due to improper storage of refrigerated foods; improper hand-washing and glove use; the establishment’s designated Person-in-Charge (PIC) could not demonstrate knowledge of proper food handling, storage, and safety; refrigerated foods stored above 41 degrees; poisonous materials were observed to be stored above food; and unsanitary conditions of establishment in the form of grime, rotting food, and oil accumulation on all kitchen surfaces.
Sumo Deli was subsequently required to address an array of corrective actions. A follow up inspection was conducted on Wednesday, with the department determining that all violations had been resolved.
The restaurant previously received a red placard in July 2021 for 13 violations, which were corrected and the establishment reopened.
DOH’s Food Safety Branch protects and promotes the health of Hawaii residents and visitors through education of food industry workers and regulation of food establishments statewide. The branch conducts routine health inspections of food establishments where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed, or sold.
