After a tough loss in their HHSAA opener, Hawaii Prep rebounded Friday with a shutout victory over Waialua at Patsy Mink Field in Maui to secure a spot in Saturday’s fifth place game.
Ka Makani’s Kinau Grace allowed just two hits in six innings of work in the circle, striking out six to earn the win.
In the batter’s box, Grace was one of three Hawaii Prep players – the others being Kailena Akau and Kyana Brucelas – to notch two hits on the day. Akau led the team by scoring a pair of runs, while Kaila Kaahu, Johnna-Lee Lorenzo, Brucelas and Grace each drove in one run.
Kaahu opened the scoring in the top of the third, driving in Akau with a one-out double. The third inning was Hawaii Prep’s best offensive inning, as they took advantage of four hits and an error to record four runs.
The 9-1 Ka Makani advance onto Saturday’s fifth place game against 12-7 Aiea; first pitch is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at Patsy Mink Field in Maui.
Aiea 5, Kamehameha-Hawaii 2

Aiea jumped out to a first-inning lead and never trailed Friday. Na Alii were led offensively by Montana Cababag, who recorded three hits and two RBI.
Taja Souza got the win in the circle, allowing seven hits in five innings, while Kamehameha’s Emily Hora took the loss.
