WAIMEA – As the BIIF Track and Field Championship inches closer and closer, the contenders on the Big Island are starting to become clear in events across the board.
Of course, some of the usual suspects made their impact felt once again in this season’s latest meet, held Saturday at Hawaii Prep’s Stanford W. Shutes Track.
On the boys’ side, Kamehameha’s Kahiau Poe claimed the 100-meter dash (11.53 seconds) and long jump (20’6.25”) and Waiakea’s Kederang Ueda recorded a new season-best time in the 1,500- meter run (4:21.74) to win the event for the fifth week in a row.
For the girls, a quartet of athletes recorded multiple victories: Kealakehe’s Layla Grace in the 100-meter dash (13.47 seconds) and long jump (15’6.25”) and Cozette in the 1,500 (5:23.90) and 3,000-meter (11:46.33) runs, and HPA’s Jordan Perry in the 200 (27.27 seconds) and 400-meter (1:01.47) dashes and Elaina Head in the high (4’9”) and triple (31’7”) jumps.
The Waiakea boys and Hawaii Prep girls led the way, each placing in the top 3 13 times on the day.
Sprinkled throughout the day were a number of performances that rank among the best in the Aloha State. In just his second race of the season in the 800 meters, Waiakea’s Kyoshi Todd crossed the line in 2:03.72, knocking more than seven seconds off his previous best and vaulting all the way to the third-fastest mark in the state. Other Waiakea athletes posting top-10 marks in Hawaii Saturday include Ueda in the 1,500 (5th in the state), Alex Tuson in the 300-meter hurdles (42.15, 5th in the state), as well as the 4×400 relay teams from Waiakea (6th in the state) and Konawaena (8th in the state). The Warriors’ final time of 3:36.38 edged Konawaena to win by just over three seconds.
Four girls athletes recorded top-10 performances, as well, led by Waiakea’s Rylee and Isabelle Au; both cleared 10’3” in pole vault, which represents the fourth-best height in Hawaii this season. Perry’s season-best run in the 400 bumps her up to the ninth-fastest mark statewide. Keaau’s Kamaile Paikuli also set a new season-best in discus with a toss of 107’1”, good for fifth-best in the state. Wood’s 3,000 time – while a new top mark in the BIIF this year – just missed out on cracking the state’s top 10.
The Big Island’s track and field athletes will be back in action next week, when they return to Keaau High School.
