It was a clean sweep Saturday morning for the Waveriders’ tennis teams, as both the boys and girls teams won every match against the Lions of Makua Lani.
The Kealakehe boys took all three of their matches in straight sets, only losing one game along the way; Hunter Felte defeated Cody Baker at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0, Keoni Roth defeated Calvin Brown at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 and the duo of Raphael Gadot and Eunjun Shin defeated Cody Smith and John David Gallagher 6-0, 6-1.
On the girls’ side, the most competitive match of the day came at No. 2 doubles, where Kealakehe’s Sabrina Lelm and Jasmin Kim defeated Makua Lani’s Trinity Brown and Milena Freire in a tiebreaker 6-3, 4-6, (10-3). The three other matches of the day were decided in straight sets: Maile-Lei Ji over Aliya Richert at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0, Kristen Felte over Siu Jeong at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0 and the pair Kayleigh Tatum Arias and Yukari Eckart over Mikella Chang and Ella Flegel at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-0.
Makua Lani is back in action on Monday, when they’ll travel to Waimea to take on Hawaii Prep. Kealakehe, meanwhile, will host Konawaena on Wednesday.
In other action Saturday, Konawaena’s girls split their contest against Kohala. Kohala’s Anela Cambra defeated Konawaena’s Kira Edmundson at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2, while the Wildcat pair of Miwa Johnson and Emerald Umiamaka-Spencer took down Christine Kimball and Marley Yamamoto at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-2.
In the three contested matches between Hilo and St. Joseph, the Vikings scored three wins. Hilo’s Jonathan Okamura won at the boys’ No. 1 singles against Cesar Rivera 6-2, 6-2; as for the girls, the Vikings’ Paige Masulit and Jenna Rivera defeated Karlynn Aoki and Liayla-Romona Pinnow at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-2, while Sidney Lam and Dylan Yanazaki took care of business over Brianna DeLoach and Zalia-Marie Olivera in a close tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-3, 2-6, 11-9.
