The 2022 MANA Invitational Art Show features local artists and their favorite pieces at the Wailoa Art Center throughout the month of April.
Nelson and Kainoa Makua of Na Makua Designs put together the annual art show to display various art pieces by noted island artists.
“Our MANA art show is different from other art shows that usually have a juror select the pieces accepted. For MANA 2022, we want the artists themselves to select their best work that they personally feel represents their vision and mana,” Nelson Makua said. “Knowing many creative artists, we wanted to personally invite them to join us for this unique event.”
Rebecca Bryant and Claire Lacailoe took a stroll through the gallery earlier this week to look at the artwork on display, when pieces by Patti Pease Johnson caught their eye.
“I took a class by Patti, and she was just incredible,” Bryant said. “Her work is so dynamic and lovely, I mean, how could you not love this?”
Artists featured in the gallery include: Edwin Kayton, Edwin Kayton, James Kanani Kaulukukui, Kalei Nu‘uhiwa, Jimie Ramos, Linda Stevens, Richard Mortemore, Scott Hare, Bonnie Sol Hahn, Craig Neff, Stephen Davies, Jelena Clay, Christine Ahia, Jamison Ke‘a Rosehill, Scott Ziziak, Patti Pease Johnson, Scott Gorrell, Clayton Amemiya, Phyllis Cullen, Stephen Freedman, Nelson Makua and Kainoa Makua.
There also is an exhibit in the center’s Fountain Gallery called “Kupuna Kane,” which features the art of four Hawaiian artisans, Kini Burke, Keoni Turalde, Dean Ka‘ahanui and Ronald Kanakanui.
“The artists invited are a mixture of seasoned professionals and newcomers to the art world,” Nelson Makua said. “Our goal for MANA 2022 is to bring together a combination of different styles and mediums that together creates a unique visual experience for the viewer.”
MANA 2022 is open to the public now through Friday, April 29, at the Wailoa Art Center in Hilo. The gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
