Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 21 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash; one was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested seven drivers while Puna officers arrested five and South Kohala officers four, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Hilo officers arrested two impaired drivers and Hamakua officers one.
So far this year, there have been 269 DUI arrests compared with 300 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 173 major accidents so far this year compared with 180 during the same period last year.
Eleven fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2021, seven people had died.
