A day of Hawaiian crafts and talk story was open to residents and visitors as a celebration of Prince Kuhio Day Saturday at La‘i‘opua 2020.

Sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, visitors were able to partake in lauhala weaving, lei making and pa‘i‘ai making (pounding poi).

The afternoon culminated with a “talk story” session with Danny and Anna Akaka recounting their early days on Hawaii Island and love of the culture.

“This helps educate tourists about our lifestyle, especially new arrivals that now call this place home,” said La‘i‘opua 2020 president Kawehi Inaba. “It gives us an opportunity to kokua them. A lot of local people are bringing friends who just moved here.”

Inaba said three more events are being planned. For more information, visit laiopua.org.
