Big Island police arrested two dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 7 and Sunday. Three of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash; four were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 12 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six and Puna officers three, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala, North Kohala and Ka‘u officers nabbed one driver in each district.
So far this year, there have been 129 DUI arrests compared with 163 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 87 major accidents so far this year compared with 88 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, seven fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2021, five people had died.
