Aloha? I think not

I think that Mayor Mitch Roth’s suggestion that we make visitors pay to visit our beaches is probably one of the most misguided I have ever heard. First, how much money would you actually raise? You would have to have a huge staff to patrol the entrances and collect the fees. And second … and most importantly … what kind of message are we sending to our visitors? Aloha? I think not. Please put this idea on the shelf, and leave it there.

Just coincidence?

I thought that the Kealakehe Transfer Station’s Greenwaste Collection was open for green waste Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I did not see any notice of its closure for Sunday, Feb. 13, but it was closed. The dump was open. What happened? Could it be the day of the “big game” or just coincidence? What do you think? How convenient for some and inconvenient for others.

Not the mainland

In response to their Feb. 11 letter to the editor, “Why is Hawaii always so behind the times,” Robert and Susan Avallone seem to be having trouble settling in to their entitled life in a place where they loathe the way things are done but love the weather. Outside of what appears to be their privileged, myopic bubble are immune compromised or other vulnerable people in Hawaii nei and around the country and world who are suffering and dying needlessly because people like the Avallones think masks and vaccines should be old hat.

Instead of asking our state to change its spots to accommodate conspiratorial “secret agenda” views, the Avallones might be better off moving on to a place they understand, appreciate, and more clearly belong.
