Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 31 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.
Kona officers arrested 10 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala and Puna and officers nabbed two drivers in each district.
So far this year, there have been 105 DUI arrests compared with 133 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 75 major accidents so far this year compared with 70 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, seven fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2021, five people had died.
