Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 24 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested seven drivers and South Hilo officers arrested four while officers in South Kohala and North Kohala arrested two motorists in each district, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, Puna and Ka‘u officers nabbed one driver in each district.
So far this year, there have been 86 DUI arrests compared with 106 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 61 major accidents so far this year compared with 55 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, six fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By that time in 2021, two person had died.
