Michael Arkel

Michael Alan Van Arkel, 69, of Hilo died Jan. 18, 2022, at his residence. Born in Bakersfield, California, he was an aircraft inspector, involved in the motion picture special effects industry, a pyro technician and a wing sprints stock car racer.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 5 at 25-233 Ua Nahele St. in Hilo for a celebration of life. Call (808) 934-7318 for information.

He is survived by wife, Collene Van Arkel of Hilo; children, Kevin Van Arkel of San Francisco, Jeffrey Van Arkel of Oregon, Eric Bermudez of Oklahoma, Edward Bermudez, Idamarie (George) Bermudez-Ramey and Shondell Bermudez, all of Hilo, and Issac Bermudez of Honolulu; brothers, Thomas (Heather) Van Arkel of Bakersfield, California, and Joseph (Amy, Ashley, Tabitha and Jacy) Van Arkel of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mabel Hoshide

Mabel Takae Hoshide, 93, of Hilo, died Jan. 11, 2022, at her residence. Born in Honuapo, Ka’u, she was a retired Ka’u High School and Pahala Elementary School teacher and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Kyodan and Buddhist Women’s Association (Fujinkai), National Education Association-Retired, Hawaii State Teachers Association-Retired, and Hawaii Island Teachers Association-Retired, and attended Hawaii Island Adult Care.

Private services held.

She is survived by sons, Howard (Jill) Hoshide of Keaau, and Lloyd (Mona) Hoshide of Kona; daughters, Laurie Cooke of Honolulu, and Wendy (Jeffrey) Gomes of Hilo; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Lorraine Chung

Lorraine “Sayo” Chung, 81, of Hilo, died Dec. 17, 2021, at Pohai Malama in Hilo. Born in Hakalau, she was a retired cashier for Sure Save Supermarkets and a member of the Hilo Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Private services held. The family asks that flowers and koden (monetary offerings) be omitted.

She is survived by son, Mark (Ruth)Forbes; sister, Earline (Eugene) Yokoi of Oahu; grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Matthew Haili Jr.

Matthew K. Haili Jr., 67, of Keaau, died Jan. 7, 2022 in Hilo. Born Aug. 22, 1954 in Waimanalo, Oahu, he drove tour buses for Enoa, Roberts Hawaii, and Polynesian Adventures.

He is survived by children, Kuuipo Haili, Hiilani Haili Finau, and Matthew Haili III; sisters, Charmaine Okeson, Ginger (Steve) Melnick, Crystal Haili, Lovie Perry, and Elilee Haili; significant other, Laurie Dinwiddie; and six grandchildren.
