Frances Sherrard

Frances Chang Sherrard, 98, of Hilo died Nov. 20, 2021, at her residence. Born on Maui, she was the retired principal at Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School and public schools administrator, founder of the East Hawaii Cultural Center, and member of the Zonta Club of Hilo, Retired Hawaii State Teachers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.

Friends may call at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at East Hawaii Cultural Center for a service. Casual attire.

She is survived by step-daughters, Celeste Sherrard of Las Vegas, Kathie Sherrard of Hilo, and Cynthia (Duncan) Galland of Diamondhead, Mississippi; step-sons, Joseph (Dorothy) Sherrard and William Sherrard, both of Sacramento, California; brother, Harold Chang of Honolulu; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Frederick Olival

Frederick Fernandez Olival, 95, of Hilo, died Nov. 5, 2021 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired groundskeeper for Hale Kawili Adult Student Housing, minister of the Eucharist, hospitality usher and member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Dec. 8 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 9 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for Mass. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park Section 7. Family requests no flowers and casual attire be worn.

He is survived by step-children, Valerie (Ronald) Rillon of Reno, Nevada, and Angel Soares, Charlene (Alvin) Miyashiro, Sandra (Cyril) Nuha, Marilyn (Harold) Pakele and Benjamin (Elizabeth) Legaspi, all of Hilo; sister, Florence Craig of Claremont, North Carolina; brother, Wilfred Olival of Las Vegas; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
