KEAAU — There is no truth to the rumor that Sheynen-Wyatt Nahale, TJ Arakawa and Ayzen Cummings caused a power surge that made the scoreboard malfunction function Friday night at Keaau.
The defense could probably use some tightening before Kealakehe hits the meat of its schedule, but the damage wasn’t anything the electric trio couldn’t hurdle as they piled up points for the Waveriders.
Nahale threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns, including a 65-yard scoring strike to Cummings, and Arakawa, built like a pitfall at 5 feet 6 and 180 pounds, ran through tackles for 255 yards and three scores as the Waveriders powered past Keaau 54-34.
Kealakehe (3-0, 2-0 BIIF Division I) has done what’s needed to remain undefeated ahead of upcoming tests against Hilo (Friday) and Konawaena (Nov. 19).
Nahale, a senior, completed 28 of 43, with three of his touchdown passes going to Cummings.
In the third quarter, Damon Sharp had an 18-yard run to set up Keaau (1-2) near the goal line. On first-and-goal from the 2, the Cougars ran an RPO (run pass option) play. Sophomore quarterback Kaohu Kaluna ran the ball, stopped, and the Waveriders took the bait. They blitzed toward Kaluna who found a wide open Rockie Abadilla for an easy touchdown. The Cougar duo connected again for the two-point conversion to get Keaau within 34-26.
Nahale, the third generation Waverider after grandpa and coach Joe Nahale and his dad Wyatt, his current coach, threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Cummings, who booted the PAT for a 41-26 score.
Arakawa scored on a 3-yard run to increase the score to 47-26.
On Keaau’s next possession, Kaluna showcased his arm talent when he zipped a 40-yard scoring strike to junior speed burner Josiah Hoohuli. Masen Silva caught a pass for the two-point conversion, and the Cougars trailed 47-34.
Arakawa had four straight running plays to drain the clock before Nahale fired an 8-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Acia. Cummings kicked the PAT, and the Waveriders led 54-34. Arakawa carried the ball 21 times.
The stats for Nahale and Arakawa came courtesy of the Waveriders. The BIIF announced the game was going to start at 6 p.m. in an email to the media, but the kickoff was moved up more than an hour without notice. In addition, the scoreboard wasn’t working.
If it was, Nahale, Arakawa and Cummings would have lit it up by themselves.
Hawaii Prep 51, Ka’u 0: Ka Makani improved to 3-0 with the BIIF Division II win Saturday in Waimea, and they still haven’t allowed an offensive touchdown.
The Trojans (0-2), meanwhile, have yet to score.
