Cherie Volante
Cherie Kazmira Volante, 55, of Hilo, died Sept. 12, 2021 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Keene, New Hampshire, she was a lifelong scholar and volunteer.

She is survived by son, Caley Volante of New Mexico; daughters, Caritia (Volante) and Justin Krakow of Colorado; and Caryzma Volante of New Hampshire; father, Ernest Meattey Jr. of New Hampshire; brother, Darryl (Lois) Meattey of New Hampshire; four grandchildren; and nephews, aunts, and cousins.

Mikio Izu
Mikio Izu, 97, of Captain Cook, died Oct. 30, 2021 at his residence. Born April 21, 1924, in Honaunau, he was a retired carpenter and a self-employed coffee farmer and member of Carpenter’s Union #745, Yamaguchi Ken Club and the Kona Koyasan Daishiji Mission.
Services will be held at a later date. Family requests no flowers or koden.
He is survived by son, Leighton (Ye Chen) Izu of Davis, California; daughters, Colleen Tajiri of Alameda, California, and Yvonne Izu, Janine (Gerard) Patary, and Nichol Izu, all of Ewa Beach, Oahu; sisters, Betty (Kenneth) Ebata of Honolulu and Loretta Kitaoka of Captain Cook; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Matthew Kaukini
Matthew Leialoha Kaukini, 68, of Hilo, died Oct. 6, 2021 at Hilo Medical Center. Born May 2, 1953, in Hilo, he was a retired truck driver for the state Highway Division.
Friends may call at 10 a.m. Nov. 13 at Connect Point Church in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Urn burial to follow at Alae Cemetery (New Urn Section).
He is survived by step-brother, Clarence McColgan of Georgia; brother, Abraham Kaukini of Hilo; sisters, Shirley Namauu, Lucy Kaukini and Bernadette Kaukini of Hilo; and numerous nephews and nieces.
