A calf walked away unscathed Friday after falling 80 feet from a cliff in Pepeekeo and being hoisted from the shoreline to safety by fire rescue personnel.
A calf walked away unscathed Friday after falling 80 feet from a cliff in Pepeekeo and being hoisted from the shoreline to safety by fire rescue personnel.
Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel responded about 5:45 a.m. after receiving a call from animal control officers with the Hawaii Police Department reporting a 200-pound calf had apparently fallen off an 80-foot cliff to the shoreline below, according to a media release from the fire department. The bovine landed in a small bay area with vertical cliffs on all sides, blocking all means of escape.
Once on scene, a fire rescue specialist, who has “extensive ranching experience,” lassoed the calf and restrained it. Personnel then used a high-angle rope rescue system to hoist the animal 60 feet up the cliff to a ledge where they were then able to walk it out to a safe location.
“The calf was then safely released into it’s [sic] pasture where it ran off unscathed,” the media release reads.
All units were back in quarters by 8 a.m.
