Alfonso Mitchell

Alfonso Samson Mitchell, 89, of Kapaau, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, at Kohala Hospital. Born July 30, 1932, in Kokoiki, he was a retired park maintenance supervisor for the County of Hawaii and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Kohala Ward, Kohala Senior Citizens Club, Boy Scouts of America and Hawaii Gateball Association.

Private services.

He is survived by wife, Haruko Mitchell of Kapaau; daughters, Valerie Mitchell of Las Vegas, Janice (Russell Reese) Mitchell of Edgewood, Maryland and Sharon Mitchell of Thatcher, Arizona; son, Glen (Emma) Mitchell of Honololu; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Mina Switzer of Kohala.

Susan Feldner

Susan Ruth “Buttons” “Grandma Sue” Feldner, 88, of Mountain View, died Sept. 25, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was a retired bus driver with the Old Bridge, New Jersey school district, and a member of New Hope Volcano and a volunteer for the Under His Wings Ministry.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Oct. 23 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 at Homelani Memorial Park for a graveside committal service. Casual attire.

She is survived by son, William (Amy Kim) Feldner of Honolulu; daughter, Diane Feldner of New Jersey; brother, Anthony Zignoli of Florida; sister, Mary Ann Tenney of Florida; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Chieko Tanimoto

Chieko Tanimoto, 103, of Hilo, died Sept. 12, 2021, at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was a retired flower packer with the former Mauna Loa Orchids Nursery and a member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and the Buddhist Women’s Association.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary donations).

She is survived by son, Roy (Jo Ann) Tanimoto of Hilo; daughters, Gladys (Richard) Tokuoka of Honolulu and Betsy Sakoda of Kauai; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hardy Iida

Hardy Sunao Iida, 84, of Hilo, died Sept. 27, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 9, 1937 in Pahala, he retired from the state Department of Education as an industrial arts teacher who taught at Hilo High, Hilo Intermediate and Waiakea High schools, member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Hoyukai (Friendship Society) and was the former facility manager for the Sangha Hall.

Friends may call from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Oct. 29 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for public visitatiojn. Memorial service will be private. Casual attire is requested. No flowers.

He is survived by wife, Janet Iida of Hilo; son, Erwin (Julie) Iida of Hilo; daughter, Dana (Bennett) Takeuchi of Honolulu; sister, Mae (Howard) Okumura of Mililani; three grandsons; and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Kristi Hirata

Kristi Masako Hirata, 52, of Hilo, died Oct. 4, 2021 at Hilo Medical Center. Born April 13, 1969 in Hilo, she was an educational assistant at Maui Community College, and a training supervisor at Borders Books and Music Store.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Oct. 28 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a public visitation. Memorial service to follow will be private. Casual attire. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings).

She is survived by parents, Harris and Joyce Hirata of Hilo; sister, Jodi Hirata of Los Angeles; brother, Grant (Arpana) Hirata of Palm Springs, California; aunts, Gracie (George) Matsuo, Eileen (Paul) Hirota and Nan (Danny) Stavnshoj, all of Honolulu; two nephews; and numerous cousins.
