Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for suspected drunken driving Oct. 4 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than age 21.
South Hilo officers arrested seven drivers while Kona officers arrested six, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, officers in South Kohala arrested three motorists and Puna officers two.
So far this year, there have been 826 DUI arrests compared with 748 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 616 major accidents so far this year compared with 594 during the same period last year.
As of Tuedsay, 20 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 13 people had died.
