Big Island Brewhaus recently earned a gold medal for its Dark Sabbath Belgian-style strong specialty ale at the U.S. Open Beer Championship held in September in Ohio.
The Waimea-based brewer was the lone Big Island entity to earn a medal in the event, which is one of the top three beer competitions in the United States. It beat out Ohio-based HighGrain Brewing’s Oost, which took silver, and two breweries out of the southeast that tied for bronze.
Two other Hawaii-based brewers earned awards in the compeitiohn: Waikiki Brewing and Maui Brewing. In the American barley wine category, Waikiki Brewing’s 6th Anniversary Barleywine took gold and the brewery’s 5th Anniversary Barleywine took bronze. Maui Brewing was awarded a silver meda in the coconut category for its Coconut Hiwa Porter.
More than 8,000 beers represetating over 140 different styles were entered in the 2021 U.S. Open Beer Championship.
Toppling Goliath Brewing of Decorah, Iowa was awarded the 2021 Grand National Champion by winning four gold and two silver medals. Schulz Brau Brewing out of Nashville, Tennessee placed second by winning three gold medals and a silver. Motorworks Brewing out of Bradenton, Florida took third place overall, earning two gold medals and three silver medals.
