Mamerto Macanas Jr.
Mamerto Sarmiento Macanas Jr., 82, of Kapaau, died Sept. 22, 2021, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kohala, he was a retired truck driver for the former Kohala Sugar Co., retired from the Hawaii Army National Guard, and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hawi and Local Boys Kupuna Softball Team.

He is survived by daughters, Lorna Collins of Alaska and Tammy Macanas of Las Vegas; brother, Rudy Macanas of Keaau; sisters, Florence Adones of California and Linda Naihe and Carol (Lester) Ching, all of Kohala; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Milnor Lum
Milnor Fook Cheong Lum, 94, of Panaewa, died Sept. 30, 2021, in Hilo. Born Jan. 24, 1927, in Honolulu, he worked in landscaping design and maintenance for the counties and as an entrepreneur in the same field, was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and an advocate of self-sufficiency, education and preserving Hawaiian heritage.

He is survived by children, Bran (Kathie) Furman, Dina (Shannon) Hinkle and Scott Furman; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Herbert Kiyabu
Herbert Hisaya Kiyabu, 83, of Hilo, died Sept. 20, 2021, at his residence. Born in Honolulu, he retired as an economic analyst for the California Department of Transportation and was a member of the Hilo Parkinson Rock Steady Boxing program, YMCA Parkinson exercise program, Senior Bowling League, Waiakea Senior Exercise program, Walk with a Doc, Hiroshima Kenjinkai and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
