Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for suspected drunken driving Sept. 6 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.
South Kohala officers arrested six drivers while Puna officers arrested five drivers and Kona officers four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Hilo officers arrested three motorists.
So far this year, there have been 757 DUI arrests compared with 652 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 552 major accidents so far this year compared with 534 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, 16 fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, 13 people had died.
