A record number of new COVID-19 cases were reported Friday on the Big Island.
The state Department of Health reported 1,035 new COVID-19 cases statewide. Of those, 184 were on the Big Island, the largest number of infections identified in a single day. To date, the state has reported 59,316 cases of which 7,100 have been on the Big Island.
Hawaii County on Friday had a seven-day test positivity rate of 8.4%, above the state’s 8.9% positivity rate.
According to the DOH, 9,790 new cases have been reported in Hawaii in the past 14 days, including 1,778 on the Big Island. There has been an average of 728.4 new cases the past seven days statewide with the Big Island averaging 134 cases per day.
The island’s two most populous areas, Kailua-Kona and Hilo, have reported the most cases during the past 14 days at 425 and 502 cases, respectively. Meanwhile, Waikoloa and Waimea in South Kohala have reported 76 and 100 cases, respectively. Captain Cook and Honaunau have reported 73 cases in the past two weeks.
On Friday, 78 people with COVID-19 were remained hospitalized on the Big Island, an increase of 11 from Thursday. Four of the island’s 24 ICU beds were available with 15 of the beds occupied by COVID-positive patients, up from three on Thursday. Ten of those 15 COVID patients are on ventilators.
The department also reported nine new deaths Friday, all among Oahu residents ages 50 to 79. Eight of those individuals were hospitalized and had underlying health conditions. One man, 70-79, had underlying health conditions but died at home.
Of the 582 deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 450 were on Oahu, 67 were on Maui, 59 were on the Big Island and three on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.
