Nearly 117,000 Big Island residents were fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as of Tuesday, according to data released by the state Department of Health.
To date, including state and federal resources, 1,833,678 shots have been administered across Hawaii, health officials said. That equates to about 70.4% of the state’s population having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 62.1% having completed the inoculation process.
On the Big Island, more than 246,764 doses have been given to residents. Some 116,796 people — 59% of the island’s entire population — are fully vaccinated while another 140,469 have received their first shot. That figure includes children younger than age 12 for whom the vaccine has yet to be approved.
According to the state, the following Big Island areas have reached 70.1% of the eligible population 12 and older fully vaccinated for COVID-19: Hawi, Honokaa, Hilo, Papaikou and Pepeekeo.
Reporting a vaccination rate of 60.1% to 70% were: Hakalau, Honomu, Laupahoehoe, Ninole, Ookala, Papaaloa and Kealakekua.
Most of West Hawaii is still reporting 45.1% to 60% of the population vaccinated, including: Holualoa, Keauhou, Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, Waimea, Kapaau, Kurtistown and Keaau.
Reporting 35.1% to 45% of the population vaccinated are Paauilo, Captain Cook, Honaunau, Naalehu, Volcano and Pahoa. Areas reporting less than 35% of the population inoculated are Ocean View, Pahala and Mountain View.
The state is currently in Phase 2 of its vaccination plan, with all individuals 12 years of age and older eligible to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Only Pfizer has been fully approved by FDA for persons age 12 and older. Johnson & Johnson and Moderna have received emergency use authorization from the FDA and are available to adults over age 18.

North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea offers vaccinations free without appointment from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.
